Marshalls moving in to Southgate Mall

Anticipated to open in fall 2019, the recently announced Marshalls department store will be located at the Southgate Mall on 14th Street in the space formerly occupied by Steele’s.

Kingsville shoppers will have a new retail option later this year with the arrival of a new Marshalls department store planned to open in the fall season at the Southgate Mall on 14th Street.

Founded in 1956, Marshalls has more than 1,000 retail stores in locations across the United States and Canada. The new Kingsville store will open at the former site of Steele’s at the mall, between Bealls and Modern Nails and Spa.

“They’ve already begun work,” Manny Salazar, director of the Greater Kingsville Economic Development Council, said Monday.

According to a release from the Greater Kingsville EDC announcing the $600,000 project, Marshalls is expected to hire between five and seven full-time and 40 to 50 part-time workers.

Salazar said because the new Marshalls will be occupying space that had previously been utilized for a department store, it would not require “a complete overhaul” to the facility.

“So it won’t mean anything major,” he said. “It’s more like a relocation, where they just need to clean it up, move a few things around, bring in the racks and clothes, change the sign and you’re basically there.”

Salazar said the inclusion of Marshalls at Southgate Mall will have the additional benefit of attracting more shoppers to the existing businesses in the shopping center such as Hobby Lobby, Bealls, Tractor Supply and Hibbett Sports.

“Marshalls will be a great asset not only in terms of jobs and tax base, but in convenience for shoppers who may otherwise have to travel to Corpus Christi to find the clothing options that they need,” he said.

While the Greater Kingsville EDC is not ready to announce any additional projects or businesses coming to the area, Salazar said retail recruitment is a priority for them.

“It’s something that we work on every day,” he said. “There are more things coming. It’s just a matter of getting to the point where we can formally announce it.”

“We’ve had steady interest,” he added. “It just time for these deals to get done.”

Marshalls is anticipated to open in fall 2019.
