Commissioner Lomas appears before Kleberg County grand jury

Kleberg County Precinct 4 Commissioner Romeo Lomas said Friday that he testified before the Kleberg County Grand Jury on Wednesday.

“They asked questions and I said what I had to say,” Lomas said.

The Texas Attorney General’s office is investigating a complaint that Lomas used Kleberg County equipment to demolish his East Yoakum Street barber shop a few months ago.

Officials won’t say who filed the complaint, but Lomas says it is motivated by politics.

“They can’t get me at the polls, so they’re going after me this way,” he said.

“I’m still here and as long as the people of Precinct 4 continue to support me, I will still be here,” Lomas, who is serving his 31st year as Precinct 4 County Commissioner, said.

Lomas said he paid $500 for a contractor to bring in his backhoe and demolish the structure.

“I paid for an 18-wheeler to haul it off,” the Precinct 4 Commissioner said, “and I opened up a personal account with the city and paid $746 in fees to haul the debris to the city landfill.”

Lomas said he understands the grand jury will continue its probe of the allegations this coming Wednesday.

“I am not stupid,” Lomas said.

“After 31 years of service, why would I do something like that,” Lomas said.

Kleberg County Judge Pete De La Garza said he can’t comment on the situation of Commissioner Lomas because he, too, is under subpoena.
