Former longtime Bishop resident, Fred “Freddie” Ernest Shafer, 78, of Katy, died Sept. 30, 2009, in Katy.

He was born July 22, 1931, in Pflugerville, to Fred and Jessie Shafer.

Survivors include his sons, Fred (Patti) Shafer Jr. of Katy, and Larry (Lisa) Shafer of San Antonio; daughter, Debbie Dodson of Katy; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; sisters, Ellen Suggs and Barbara Hubert; brothers, Alfred Shafer and Clifton Shafer.

He attended Bishop High School as an outstanding athlete. He continued his love of sports by refereeing football and basketball games. He also volunteered many hours helping to build the Bishop City Park while living in Bishop.

The family visitation was Oct. 2 at the First Baptist Church in Bishop with services starting at 3 p.m. that afternoon.

A graveside service followed at the Bishop Restland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Bishop.

Turcotte-Piper Mortuary in Kingsville was in charge of the arrangements.
