H.M. King classes of 77, 78, 79, 80 and 81 gather for reunion

Class of ‘77 Class of ‘77 The H.M. King High Class of 1979 celebrated their 30 year class reunion on the weekend of July 17-18.

The classes of 77, 78, 80 and 81 were invited as well as numerous teachers.

Teachers who attended were Aminta Colin Perkins, Earl Simpson, Rolando Molina, and Bobbie Nix.

A letter written by Mr. Terry Anderson’s wife was read as to why they could not attend the reunion and touched the hearts of many classmates.

“Combining the five classes was a great idea. What originally started out as a small and simple reunion turned out into one of the biggest and most memorable reunions ever,” Reunion organizer Diana Ochoa said.

Classmates from California, Florida, Las Vegas, Wisconsin, Colorado, Indonesia and all over Texas traveled to attend the reunion.

Lester Butch Ewing from North Carolina drove his Harley with his dog Chewy to attend the reunion, they put a total of 3400 round trip miles on the Harley.

Over 350 classmates including spouses attended the reunion.

On Friday morning about 10 classmates got together for a golf tournament at the LE Ramey Golf Course. Sonny Juarez (class of 78), organizer the golf tournament.

The main objective of the golf tournament was to have fun and catch up on old times. It was not meant for competition.

A few classmates joined Charles Leon at 6 a.m. Saturday morning and jogged around Dick Kleberg Park before it got too hot.

On Saturday, July 18 at 10 a.m. classmates were invited to the high school to take a trip down memory lane. Approximately 60 classmates met at the school to see if anything had changed.

Mr. Maldonado, the assistant principal at H.M. King greeted us in the front office in the morning and took us on a tour of the school and everyone was taken back in time and saw a few changes.

“Even though there was lots of construction going on, everyone who toured the school had flashbacks when they were in school,” Ochoa said.

Mr. Rolando Molina, the band director was at the school and allowed classmates to tour the band hall.

“Everyone who went to the school, had a great time and as we left the school some classmates sang the Alma mater and fight song,” Ochoa said.

After touring the school several classmates ate at local restaurants, including Young’s Pizza, Pizza Parlor and King’s Inn while others enjoyed their time visiting with friends and family.

A T-shirt designed by Fred Fernandez (class of 80) and classmates will wear them to support the Brahmas during the Homecoming game on Oct. 16.

A limited number of shirts were printed and there are a few shirts left and will be sold at the game.

On Friday night, classmates enjoyed reminiscing with each other at the K.C. Hall on 14th Street.

The K.C. Hall was transformed into a Casino Theme with tables decorated with Brahma Bull figurines as well as casino hats.

“A big “THANK YOU” to the decoration committee, you all know who you are and we couldn’t have done it without you all,” Ochoa said.

“Casino Night was made possible because of the generosity of several classmates.”

There were several prizes donated for casino and some prizes were used as door prizes. The center stage at the KC Hall was filled with lots of prizes for classmates to try to win.

“Thank you Linda Muguerza for setting up all the gifts donated on the stage and making it look beautiful. A special thank you to all who brought and donated a prize, because of you this casino was made possible. Everyone had a great time playing black jack, craps, roulette, Texas Hold’em poker and the slot machines,” Ochoa said.

A live auction was held with some of the prizes donated.

A special thank you goes to Lee and Joette Barden for bidding on the dove hunt donated by Ruben and Elva Alaniz.

Rudy Galvan bid on the wooden Adirondack chair donated by Howard Yates.

Armando Rios bid on two blue and gold macramé stadium chairs donated by Eddie and Diana Ochoa.

Earl Simpson also bid on two red and blue macramé stadium chairs donated by Eddie and Diana Ochoa.

Hunter Taylor bid on the bottle of Crown Royal donated by Gus Carrales.

Tom Moore bid on an antique porcelain doll with stand donated by Angie Amador Guzman.

Approximately $650 was raised and the proceeds will be used for next reunion.

A special thank you goes to the auctioneer, Roy Ruiz.

A barbecue dinner including brisket, sausage, potato salad and beans with all the trimmings was served.

Classmate Eddie Ochoa (class of 1978) was the caterer for the dinner, and Orlando Lozano (class of 1979) helped with the barbecue.

A dessert bar was available for all those who had a sweet tooth. A cake, apple and pineapple empanadas, pan de polvo cookies, and other sweet items were served.

The family of Eddie and Diana Ochoa helped serve the barbecue and also worked the entrance table.

Thank you to two anonymous class of 1979 members who generously sponsored the music.
