The event was declared an overwhelming success by coordinators and local business owners Lisa and Jerry Bockholt.
“We were thrilled with the turnout,” said Frank Horlock, local philanthropist and driving force behind the event’s organization.
“Being able to offer these important screenings for free was a tremendous benefit to the community”, Lisa Bockholt said.
Hundreds of local area residents attend and benefit from free cancer screenings.
“This area is so fortunate to have the generosity of donors such as Mr. Horlock, Lee Bass, Tio Kleberg, Gus Canales, Hugh McColl, Barry Andrews, Quality Chrysler, and Bill Colston, Jr., whose financial support helped turn this event into a reality,” she added.
Taking place at the hospital’s H-E-B Education Center, attendees were able to pickup a variety of literature and give-away items, and listen to a presentation by Dr. Gerard Voorhees, Radiation Oncologist, on the warning signs of breast and prostate cancer. Utilizing their new digital, stateof the-art mammography equipment, the hospital’s radiology department was able to provide 160 local women with mammograms that day, or vouchers for mammograms which they could schedule at their convenience in the next few months. A total of 57 men were provided with PSA blood tests, which screen for signs of prostrate cancer.
“Raleigh White, Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg’s Director of Ancillary Services, deserves much of the credit for the organization of this event,” said Lisa Bockholt.
“In addition, the event would not have been possible without the volunteer support of local physician Dr. Martin Boyd, Texas A&M Pharmacy School students, Julie Stark and Sherry Carr-Smith, with marketing at Christus Spohn Health System, and Erin Hazelwood and her oncology team from Christus Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi,” Lisa Bockholt added.
