Warriors blank Brahmas 19-0
H.M. King High School’s varsity football team lost 19-0 to Tuloso-Midway in their third District 31-4A game of the season on Friday.
In the first quarter, Jordan Boone zipped out on a 43-yard running play that moved the Brahmas out of their own territory and into Tuloso’s. Boone also made a ten yard reception during the same series and Demetre Richardson gained ten more yards on the ground bringing H.M. King very close to scoring but a T.M. defensive player intercepted a Julian Guerra pass in the end zone a few plays later.
Sean Cantu later halted T.M.’s opening drive when he tackled their running back for a seven yard loss on third down. Blake Sugarek blocked a T.M. punt in the second quarter but the Brahmas coughed up the ball on the very next play. The Warriors scored eight plays later on a 6-yard run.
T.M. again reached pay dirt during their first drive of the second half which they punctuated with a 15-yard scoring run.
Marcus Ramirez almost put H.M. King on the scoreboard with an amazing over the shoulder catch in the end zone late in the game, but referees declared he did not keep his feet inbounds. The Warriors tacked on their third score on a 15-yard run with 25 seconds left in the game.
Head Coach Andrew Hrncir firmly believed his team performed a lot better than the final score suggested. Running well for the Brahmas were David Lewis, Vando Gonzalez, Boone, and Richardson.
“Our defense played great and our offense played outstanding,” Hrncir said. “We made some plays on offense but did not capitalize near the end zone three times and we cannot win football games like that but I am very proud of our kids.”
H.M. King’s current offensive woes are being caused by more than just one player.
“I do not think it is all Julian, we had four dropped passes tonight and we have to make plays for him,” Hrncir said. “He is a young quarterback as a junior, only has three or four games under his belt and I think he did a good job tonight but we all just need to step up and make plays for him.”
At 1-2 in district, H.M. King’s remaining 31- 4A contests (Flour Bluff, Calallen, and Laredo High Schools Nixon and LBJ) have now become more crucial if the Brahmas want to advance into the postseason.
“Every one of them is big now,” Hrncir said. “We can’t let one drop now so we will get back to work tomorrow morning and get ready for Nixon next week.”
