Badgers versus Cowboys game statistics posted

ZACK LOWMAN ...Offensive player of the week ZACK LOWMAN ...Offensive player of the week The Bishop Badgers varsity football team opened district play with a 34-14 win over the Premont Cowboys this past Friday in Bishop.

“I am very proud of the way we played, we must continue to play hard to make good things happen for us…there is room for improvement,” Bishop Badger Head Coach Larry Vincent said.

The Badgers tallied 14 first down while the Cowboys were able to roundup only nine on the night.

Bishop netted 373 yards of total offense on 44 plays, 362 by way of the ground attack the offense implemented to perfection.

Time of possession tipped over to the Badgers with 24:15 to Premont’s 23:37.

The Badgers took advantage of its red-zone chances, going three for three in the game.

Leading the Badger offense this week was senior fullback Zack Lowman with 190 total yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns, followed by fellow senior quarterback Jacob Ortegon with 87 yards on just nine carries.

TRAVIS CHARLES ...Defensive player of the week TRAVIS CHARLES ...Defensive player of the week Also contributing to the Bishop offensive totals were sophomore running back Jacob Beltran with 70 yards on three carries and two touchdowns while senior running back David Herrera picked up 38 yards on six rushes and one touchdown.

In the air, Ortegon completed one of two pass attempts for 11 yards, with Herrera being the recipient of that lone pass completion.

On defense, the Badgers were led by sophomore safety Travis Charles with 11 total tackles (10 solo, 2 assisted).

Senior linebacker Tommy Cavazos collected 10 tackles (9 solo, 2 assisted), while junior linebacker David Perez added 5.5 tackles and senior safety J.P. Escobar contributed 4.5 tackles on the night.

On special teams, Cavazos punted three times for a total of 80 yards, longest being 33 yards.

Charles had one punt return for 16 yards and two kick off returns for 34 total yards.

“Our preparation for Hebbronville started Saturday by watching film and will continue with tough practices through the week,” Badger Assistant Coach George Luna said.

This week’s offensive player of the week goes to senior fullback Zack Lowman for leading the Bishop offense with 190 total yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns.

Defensive player of the week honors goes to sophomore safety Travis Charles for leading the Badgers with 11 total tackles (10 solo, 2 assisted) in the Bishop victory.

The Bishop Badgers will travel to face the Hebbronville Longhorns at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16 in Hebbronville.
