Friday night’s football preview
Brahmas
H.M. King High School’s varsity football team hosts Laredo Nixon during homecoming at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. The Brahmas are coming off of a 19-0 loss to Tuloso-Midway last week.
“We are just going to try to keep getting better and will begin by showing the kids the game films,” Head Coach Andrew Hrncir said. “We just need to take care of the football and make some plays.”
Offensively, the Brahmas were able to construct drives against T.M. but faltered near the end zone three times.
“I do not think T.M. was that much better than us,” Hrncir said. “If you see the stats you will see that we did move the ball down the field but just could not put it in the end zone when we needed to.”
Seahawks
Riviera-Kaufer High School’s varsity football team visits San Diego at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. The Seahawks lost their District 32-3A opener 18-6 to Santa Rosa last week. The waterbirds’ only touchdown came through a five-yard run by Cesar Gomez.
“Our team played real well and our defense did an excellent job,” Head Coach Arturo de la Rosa said. “We were 0-0 at halftime and had several opportunities to score but did not. In the second half we lost a fumble in our second series and they scored and it became a little harder for us but overall I think the kids did an excellent job.”
The Seahawks have another worthy adversary waiting for them this Friday.
“San Diego is going to be a tough team to play also,” De la Rosa said. “They are one of the top teams in the district so we are just going to have to play good football, eliminate mistakes and get after them.”
Badgers
Bishop High School’s varsity football team visits Hebbronville at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. The Badgers won their first District 32- 2A game of the season over Premont 34-14 last week.
Head Coach Larry Vincent was very enthusiastic after his team won their league opener.
“It is almost a must to win that first one, you’re fighting uphill every bit of the way if you do not,” Vincent said. “Premont is a team we felt we should be able to beat and we did a lot of good things like not put the ball on the ground so this was a big win for us.”
Vincent said Hebbronville’s sub par nondistrict record masks how good the Longhorns actually are.
“Hebbronville is Hebbronville, they have a good football team with lots of tradition,” Vincent said. “They have a lot of kids who are physical, fast, very athletic and they are a team that even when they are down still believe they should win and will find ways to win. We’re just going to have to avoid making mistakes like missing tackles, missing assignments and putting the ball on the ground.”
Pride
Santa Gertrudis Kingsville Academy High School’s varsity football team visits Ben Bolt-Palito Blanco at 7:30 p.m. this Friday. The Pride had a bye last week.
“We used the bye week to get some of our guys, who have been banged up, healed,” Head Coach Wally Moon said. “We took it pretty easy physically and did a lot of teaching and I think we have our game plan ready to face Ben Bolt.”
Last week’s break has allowed more injured Pride players to return to the sideline.
“I would have to say half of them are back,” Moon said. “We still have two who are out, one has been out all season and another who will be out for another week with a shoulder injury.”
Academy’s defense will be put to the test with Ben Bolt having plenty of weapons on offense.
“They have a good quarterback, a good running back and a pair of good receivers,” Moon said. “They are a good ball club who likes to throw it but can also run with power so we have to be able to handle both of those things.”
