Edwina Alvarez speaks to Community Service Dept.

By Linda Snyder

On Oct. 21, the Community Service Department of the Woman’s Club of Kingsville met at The Cherry Tree Tea Room.

Edwina Alvarez of Samaritan Pantry, an emergency food pantry, spoke to members.

The pantry is located at The First Christian Church at 1900 S. Brahma Blvd.

The pantry provides between 3,000 to 4,000 pounds of food per month to the needy.

Volunteers work on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9 to 11 a.m.

The recipients must be screened and may only receive food three times per year.

They are given a weeks supply of food for their family.

The pantry receives food from grants, monetary donations, food drives, and food donations from community churches and organizations.

Alvarez orders the food from The Corpus Christi Food Bank at the cost of 14 cents per pound plus 5 cents per pound delivery charges.

Some, 57,000 pounds of food was distributed last year.

Those wishing to donate funds may make checks payable to First Christian Church Food Pantry.

Jean Claire Turcotte opened the business part of our meeting.

There were 20 members and two guests present. The events for November include The King Ranch Ranch Hand Breakfast, the tour of homes, and a KSO concert and more.

The next meeting will be on Nov. 18 at The Cherry Tree Tea Room, and the speaker will be Linda Faith, Community Relations Coordinator of The Healthwise VIP Club. Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg has over 75 members in this organization.
