Badgers versus Vaqueros game statistics posted

Defensive players of the week honors goes to defensive team

JACOB ORTEGON ...Offensive player of the week JACOB ORTEGON ...Offensive player of the week The Bishop Badgers lost a 8-7 heartbreaker against the San Diego Vaqueros this past Friday in Bishop.

“We put ourselves in a must win out situation...we are definitely not out of the post-season,” Bishop Badger Head Coach Larry Vincent told his players after the game.

The Badgers defense did a tremendous job holding the Vaqueros to only eight points in the game, unfortunately Bishop could only muster seven points of their own.

The Badgers tallied 297 yards on 48 plays and collected 15 first downs in the game.

The time of possession tipped to the Badgers as they controlled the ball for 24:35.

Bishop converted 50 percent of their third down conversion attempts, going 5 of 10.

On defense, senior linebacker Tommy Cavazos led the Badgers with 10 total tackles (7 solo, 6 assisted) followed by sophomore safety Travis Charles with 6.5 tackles (4 solo, 5 assisted).

TAYLOR LEE ...Offensive player of the week TAYLOR LEE ...Offensive player of the week Also contributing to the defensive stand by Bishop were senior cornerback David Herrera with 5.5 tackles (5 solo, 1 assisted) and senior safety J. P. Escobar with 5.5 tackles (5 solo, 1 assisted).

On offense, the Bishop ground attack was led by senior running back Zack Lowman with 111 yards on 18 carries for an average of 6.2 yards per carry on the night.

Senior quarterback Jacob Ortegon added 71 yards on 13 while Escobar tacked on 43 yards on three carries.

In the air, Ortegon completed one of four pass attempts, the one completion for a 26 yard touchdown.

Senior receiver Taylor Lee was the recipient of the lone pass completion in the only score of the game for the Badgers.

Special teams statistics included two punts by Cavazos for 76 yards with one inside the oppositions 20 yard line.

Charles had two kick off returns for a total of 24 yards, longest being a 17 yard return.

“I am extremely proud of the way we played...we left every ounce of energy out on the field,” Vincent said.

Offensive players of the week are Ortegon and Lee for their 26 yard touchdown pass connection in the opening quarter of the game.

Defensive players of the week goes to the whole Badger defensive unit for their excellent play in holding the Vaqueros to eight points.

The Badgers will host the Santa Rosa Warriors for the final home game in district play at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 30 at Ed Gorny Stadium in Bishop.
