Liquor election results official

It’s official. All of Kleberg County is wet! After the canvassing the Nov. 3 election returns for the Local Option Liquor Election for Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 and the Texas Constitutional Amendment election became official.

“The citizens of Kleberg County authorized the legal sale of all beverages including mixed beverages,’ said Kleberg County Clerk Leo Alarcon who conducted the canvassing of the election returns.

“This covers all aspects of the sale of alcohol in Kleberg County ranging from selling wine in restaurants to liquor stores,” Alarcon said.

The county clerk read the official canvass statement Thursday at a special session of the Kleberg County Commissioners Court held in the Courthouse Annex of the Law Enforcement Center.

Only 1,035 ballots were cast. Of those 369 voted in the Local Option Liquor Precinct 1 election. The results were 288 for the local option liquor and 81 against. Kleberg County has 17,724 registered voters. Only 5.84 percent voted in this election.

I am extremely happy that the liquor option passed because it will help keep our tax money here in the city,” said Rich Miotta, HEB Unit Director.

Miotta said now HEB will be able to offer the customer a wide selection of wine.
