Bus full of Seahawks make all-district
After successfully advancing into the postseason for the first time in a handful of years, Riviera-Kaufer High School had several of their varsity football players recently selected for the All- District 32-2A team.
Selected for the first alldistrict offensive roster were Brad Jameson (tight end) and Chris Foster (split end). Picked for the first all-district defensive team were Eli Medellin (lineman), Cesar Gomez (linebacker) and Heston Van Fleet (defensive back).
Voted into the second alldistrict offensive squad were Wade Moore (running back) and Eli Medellin (lineman). Making the second alldistrict defensive list were Brad Jameson (lineman), Britt Reynolds (linebacker) and Wade Moore (defensive back).
Receiving Honorable Mention on defense were Kevin Jimenez (defensive back), Dusty Chavez (lineman), Steven Salinas (lineman), Chris Foster (defensive back), Justin Jimenez (defensive back) and Tyler Vela (defensive back). Awarded Honorable Mention on offense were Heston Van Fleet (quarterback), Steven Salinas (lineman), Jacob Salinas (running back), Brett Quackenbush (wide receiver), Adrian Caballero (running back) and Justin Jimenez (running back).
Arturo de la Rosa - a longtime assistant who just completed his third season at head coach - said he knew his boys were far better than summer speculations which had them finishing near the cellar in 32-2A.
“From the very beginning you could tell this was a very different group of kids that wanted to be here to do well,” De la Rosa said. “A lot of times you may get some kids who want to play football but not seriously, but these kids wanted to work hard and every week you could see improvement from each one of them.”
Not one to hog all of the credit, De la Rosa commended the efforts of his assistants Perry Graves, Cy Quackenbush, Joey Rendon, Zane Graves, JR Pickens and Robby MacFarland.
“I have good assistant coaches who have worked hard since the summer,” De la Rosa said. “We did our summer conditioning program, played seven-onseven games and every one of my fellow coaches did a great job of putting things together.”
De la Rosa is hoping next year’s team will build upon the momentum from this past season.
“I know this group now feels a little bit better knowing we can compete in this district,” De la Rosa said. “I am hoping things stay like that next year in knowing we are capable of making the playoffs.”
