Cayetano Lopez pleads quilty to aggravated robbery and burglary and sentenced to 19 years in prison

Cayetano “Cheezy” Lopez, a suspect in the infamous Donut Shop Robbery, has pleaded guilty to two felonies and received 19 years in prison.

Lopez plead guilty to the Aggravated Robbery causing Serious Bodily Injury (a first degree felony) and a Burglary of a Habitation (a second degree felony).

Lopez’s co-defendant plead guilty on Nov. 2 and received 20 years. In records filed with the court, a codefendant gave a statement pointing to Ortega’s guilt in the robbery and burglary.

District Attorney John Hubert, who negotiated the plea bargain, said that it was done after numerous contacts with the victim.

“The victim was happy that something was done,” Hubert said.

“He did not want to have to go to court and testify. Also, he was worried for his safety and that of his family.”

Hubert added, “By sending both co-defendants to prison for a significant period of time, this community is sending a message that there are consequences for actions.”

Hubert said the case was tricky.

“The Kingsville Police Department put together numerous small clues to draw together a picture,” he said.

“The victim in this case could not identify who shot him,” Hubert noted.

“The actual weapon he was shot with was never found; there were many unknowns,” the district attorney said.

“However, through investigation and numerous small clues, we were able to determine who committed the crimes; eventually, these co-defendants gave up details of the robbery and burglary as part of the plea agreements,” Hubert said.

“Due to information discovered subsequently, we are considering expanding the robbery investigation,” he said.
