Wesley, Winborn earn first team all-region honors
Texas A&M-Kingsville’s junior running back Fred Winborn (N. Hollywood, CA/Grant HS) and senior left guard Markeith Wesley (Navasota/Navasota HS) were tabbed with Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Super Region 4 First Team honors as announced Tuesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
In addition to Winborn and Wesley, senior left tackle Jorge Guerra (Roma/Roma HS) was picked as a second team member. Winborn is one of five underclassmen on the first team offense. He led the Lone Star Conference in rushing (1,295 yards) and scoring (114 points).
He is one of 20 individuals nationally to average over 100 yards rushing per game and is 15th overall. He did all this despite carrying the ball only 12 times for 89 yards in the first three games of the year. He gained over 200 yards in a game on two occasions, including a school-record 263 against Eastern New Mexico.
Wesley anchored an offensive line that allowed just 14 sacks in 12 games during the season despite throwing nearly 400 passes. He was a big reason why the offense ranked 22nd nationally in both yards gained (424.75) and points scored (33.92).
He has blocked for the two most prolific passing offenses in school history. He has started 41 of 45 games in his career. Guerra started alongside Wesley for four years and proved to be a dominating force this year grading out as the team’s top blocker.
He started all 45 games of his career. He and Wesley provided one of the top left sides of an offensive line in the nation.
Winborn and Wesley now advance to the national ballot to determine All-America status. The Daktronics All-America Team will be announced on December 8.
The team, which is sponsored by Daktronics, Inc., an acknowledged leader in scoring, timing and programmable display systems, is voted on by member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
