Women’s Golf newest sport in Kingsville

By Shane Meling Texas A&M-Kingsville Sports Information Director

It has been 26 years since anybody teed it up in the blue and gold of the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas, but starting in the Fall of 2010 women’s golf will compete in the Lone Star Conference and NCAA Division II.

This is the first time that women’s golf will be a varsity athletic sport at the university. “We are very happy to be adding women’s golf to our program,” said Director of Athletics Ken Oliver. “This is part of our commitment to giving more opportunities to women.”

The Javelina Athletic Department is currently undergoing a national search for the first head coach of the women’s golf program and expects to make the announcement in late December of early January.

The Lone Star Conference currently has eight schools that field a women’s golf program including: Cameron, Central Oklahoma, East Central, Northeastern State, Southwestern Oklahoma, Tarleton State, Texas A&MCommerce and West Texas A&M. Tarleton State is the reigning LSC Champions.
