La Posada Bake-Off winners announced

(Photos by Gloria Bigger Cantu) As the cliché goes “it’s a tough job but someone has to do it” and tasting the winning baking entry of the Christmas Cheesecake Supreme, proved to be a sweet experience. Elva Trevino won the 2009 Best of La Posada Bake-off Dec. 5. The Bake-Off was a real success with almost 30 entries entered.

“I really enjoy baking for my friends and family,” Trevino said smiling.

She learned to bake as a child from her older sister. After 29 years in education, the last two years as a counselor, Trevino retired. Most of her teaching employment was with the Kingsville Independent School District.

Leo Alarcon who began this event five years ago with only cookie entries and later he included other pastries and sweets and called it La Posada Bake-off. This year the Woman’s Club of Kingsville partnered with Alarcon and assisted with the event held at the Helen Kleberg Community Center, (Woman’s Club) Building.

The cookies were pan de polvo and pecan. There were four categories in the pecan division that included cakes, candy, breads. Each entry had to include pecans in the ingredients.

There were also three age divisions in each category; ages three years and up. A $5 fee was required per entry.
