Bishop Badgers varsity basketball team takes fifth in San Diego Tourney
The Bishop Badgers varsity boys basketball squad earned a fifth place finish with a 3-1 tournament record in the 14 team San Diego tournament held on Dec. 10-12 in San Diego.
Bishop stumbled out of the gates, losing the first game 43-54 against the Zapata Warriors, but rebounded nicely, collecting three straight wins.
The Badgers took game two with a 64-48 victory over the Robstown Cottonpickers, game three with a 75-51 win over the Santa Gerturdis Kingsville Academy Pride and game four with a 63-32 triumph over the Freer Buckaroos.
Leading the Badgers in the tournament was senior A.J. Gaona with 62 total points, 27 rebounds, 18 assists, seven steals and one block.
Senior Grant Michalk followed closely with 58 points, 36 rebounds, six assists, four blocks and two steals.
Junior Dave Gonzalez chipped in 43 points, 19 assists, eight rebounds, eight steals and one block.
Sophomore Jacob Beltran tacked on 36 points, 16 steals, eight rebounds, six assists, and two blocks.
Junior Robert Gaona pitched in with 29 points, 27 rebounds, 18 assists, seven steals, and one block in the four games played in the tournament.
Receiving All-Tournament honors were A.J. Gaona and Michalk as they performed at a high level throughout the tournament.
