Nicholas Knorr of Kingsville has been selected as the 2010 Relay for Life event chairman for the greater Kleberg County- Bishop area.
Knorr, originally from Detroit, Mich., moved to Texas at the age of eight and lived in Odessa throughout high school until he attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock.
He came to Kingsville in September 2008 because of an employment opportunity with Global Contact Services where he is currently employed as the facility manager.
It was at Global Contact Services where he first came in contact with Relay for Life.
“The facility had a team the year before and my father had been diagnosed with prostate cancer, so because of that, I felt connected to the cause on a more personal level and got involved,” Knorr said.
Knorr said it is through programs such as Relay for Life that advances in prostate cancer research as well as many other forms of cancer have helped patients such as his father.
As event chairman, Knorr oversees the many committees that make the event possible and makes sure that everything is on pace to be completed for the event.
“It is amazing to me that some people have been involved in this event since its inception in Kingsville,” he said.
“It is an honor to work with a group of people who are absolutely committed to the cause and I am hoping I can do justice to all of their hard work,” he said.
In it’s 11th year here, Relay for Life is the main volunteer-driven cancer fundraising event of the American Cancer Society.
Relay events are held in local communities, universities, and on military bases. Although the main objective of Relay is to raise money for cancer research and cancer patients, the event is held to spread cancer awareness, celebrate the lives of survivors, and remember those who lost their lives to cancer.
The kickoff and team registration for the Relay for Life of Kleberg-Bishop 2010 was held Thursday in the HEB Education Center at Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg.
The Relay for Life will be held April 16 at Javelina Stadium. Anyone interested in forming a team, participating on a team, or serving as a supporter can contact Diana Perez at (361) 522-7869.
