Area track teams to compete here

By Rey Sifuentes Jr.

Bishop, H.M. King and Riviera-Kaufer High School will compete at the Asics Track and Field Meet to be held at Javelina Stadium on Saturday. All three high schools will compete with 17 other teams in various running and field events.

Ten out of Kaufer’s nearly 40 competitors this season are back from last year.

“I have a pretty young team this season with a lot of freshman,” Head Coach Joey Rendon said.

The Seahawks started off the season competing in Orange Grove this past weekend. Kaufer’s boys finished fourth out of nine teams and the Lady Seahawks came in fifth.

“They all worked towards one goal from the lecture I gave them on the bus which was ‘How many points can you bring for your team’,” Rendon said. “The kids went all out and every time they finished a race they would tell us how many points they acquired. They were competing against each other to see who could bring the most points.”

Rendon said the Seahawks are still working to improve in events involving hurdles, jumping and tossing the shot put while distance and sprint runners should perform well this season.

H.M. King, meanwhile, is both top and bottom heavy when it comes to experience this season.

“For the guys, it is half and half,” Head Coach Eddie Rios Jr. said. “We have some seniors but after that we pretty much have freshman. On the girls team we have some returners like Amanda Abrigo and Hannah Peterson but we are also pretty young there too.”

The Brahmas kicked off their season at the Metro Relays in Corpus Christi this past weekend where the boys finished fifth.

David Lewis won the shot put event with a throw of 55’1”; both a personal and school record. Lewis also finished third in the Discus. B.J. Ripoyla came in third in the 200-meter Dash, fourth in the 110-meter Dash and fourth in the Triple Jump. Andrew Rivas finished second in the 3200-meter Run and fourth in the 1600-meter Run. Matthew Garza placed fifth in the Triple Jump.

Expected to have a strong showing this season is Lewis who finished fourth at region last year with a throw of just over 51 feet. Blake Sugarek and Ripoyla are anticipated to excel in sprinting events while Andrew Rivas should thrive in distance races.

For the girls, Jasmine Richardson, a freshman this season, shows signs of promise after holding her own against more experienced competition this past weekend, Rios said.

Both the Brahma boys and girls relay teams are still in search of a solid fourth runner.

This Saturday, coaches are to pick up their packets during a meeting at 8:30 a.m. Field events will commence at 9 a.m. and go in the following order: Long Jump, Triple Jump, Pole Vault, Shot Put, High Jump and Discus. Running events begin at 11 a.m. and will proceed in the following order:
