Badger varsity baseball season starts with 10-0 win
On a cold night, the No. 1 2A state ranked Bishop Badgers were on fire, beating the Skidmore-Tynan Bobcats 10-0 in five innings to start the season 1-0 on Monday, Feb. 22 in Bishop.
Joey Olvera, Dylan Horner, Patrick Ramirez and Carl Huizar all pitched in the game, with Olvera getting the start.
They combined for a one hitter through five innings of work, ending the game early on a mercy ruling.
Esteban Cuevas, Nick Pacheco and J.P. Escobar led the Badgers offensively at the plate, while Tres Figueroa scored three runs and stole two bases in the contest.
Bishop will be at full strength as several players will return to the diamond after being eliminated from the basketball playoffs on Feb. 23.
The Badgers were scheduled to compete in the Odem Tournament on Feb. 25-27 in Odem.
Tournament results were not available at press time.
Meanwhile, the Badger JV squad fell short to the Bobcats JV team 5-4.
Newcomer Joseph Rubio pitched for the JV Badgers and did well through 3 1/3 innings.
Esteban Cuevas came in as a reliever.
“The guys hit the ball pretty well considering the pitching that Skidmore had was above average for the JV level,” Bishop Badger Head Coach Nathan Borden said.
