Badger Baseball takes third at Odem tournament

The Bishop Badgers (3-0-1) varsity baseball team took third place in the Odem Tournament held this past weekend.

The Badgers defeated the Mathis Pirates 5-1 in the opener on Thursday.

Bishop’s Joey Olvera (2-0) was the starting pitcher and continued to excel by throwing strikes.

Olvera went on to strikeout six Pirate batters while allowing only four hits through five innings of work, earning him the win.

In game two, the Badgers struggled in manufacturing runs, ending in a 1-1 tie to the Port Lavaca Sandcrabs.

Due to a tie, the Sandcrabs advanced to the championship round by way of having more runners reaching third base in the game.

As a result, the Badgers were sent to battle for a third place finish.

Carl Huizar was the starting pitcher against the Sandcrabs.

After a bit of a rough start, Huizar struck out seven Port Lavaca batters.

On Saturday, the Badgers faced hosting team Odem Owls for third place.

The Bishop bats finally came alive, producing eight runs in the 8-1 victory over the Owls.

The Badgers called on A.J. Gaona (1-0) to take the mound and performed well in two innings of work.

Gaona allowed one unearned run in his first win of the season.

Patrick Ramirez came in to relieve Gaona and showed great improvement from his last outing.

Ramirez went 1 1/3 innings before giving the ball to Dylan Horner to close the door on Odem.

The leading hitters in the tournament for the Badgers were Carl Huizar, A.J. Gaona, Nick Pacheco, Tommy Cavazos and Jacob Beltran.

Cavazos and Gaona were awarded all tournament honors.

The Badgers were back on the diamond to face the Falfurrias Jerseys on Monday, March 1 in Falfurrias.
