POWERLIFTING

Riviera-Kaufer High School’s powerlifting team just concluded its first season - after an absence of five years - by competing in the Brahma Bash this past weekend. Kaufer’s lifters did not place at the event but did set personal records, Head Coach Robert McFarlin said.

Tyler Vela’s highest lifts this season were 340 in the squat, 165 in the bench press and 350 in the dead lift. Cody Salinas’ highest season marks were 225 in the squat, 135 in the bench press and 305 in the dead lift.

DJ Gonzales’ season highs were recorded at 300 in the squat, 155 in the bench press and 300 in the dead lift. Tony Ledesma’s personal best were 285 in the squat, 185 in the bench press and 370 in the dead lift in one weight class. Ledesma also competed in a heavier division where his best lifts were 315 in the squat, 200 in the bench press and 405 in the dead lift.

Adrian Arredondo’s season highs were 280 in the squat, 240 in the bench press and 300 in the dead lift. Jacob Longoria’s top hoists were 265 in the squat, 175 in the bench press and 315 in the dead lift.

Kaufer also had numerous female powerlifters this season. Among them is Cassie Wilson whose best lifts were 200 in the squat, 100 in the bench press and 245 in the dead lift. Tiffanie Trevino’s season high marks were 170 in the squat, 95 in the bench press and 200 in the dead lift.

Jenna Gutierrez’s top lifts this season were recorded at 225 in the squat, 115 in the bench press and 250 in the dead lift. Med Sandoval’s lifts peaked at 150 in the squat, 65 in the bench press and 180 in the dead lift. Shelby Szieter’s season highs were 150 in the squat, 55 in the bench press and 150 in the dead lift. Savannah Stroman’s top lifts were 125 in the squat, 65 in the bench press and 175 in the dead lift. Alina Longoria’s personal season best were marked at 225 in the squat, 95 in the bench press and 200 in the dead lift.

“We are very young this season, we have only two seniors, a junior and the rest of the team are freshmen and sophomores,” McFarlin said. “We competed and improved every week and the kids learned to really work hard. At a meet in Three Rivers, back in January, our junior varsity girls brought home Riviera’s first ever powerlifting trophy when they placed third as a team.”

The Seahawks should improve next year after experiencing plenty this season.

“We have a great foundation, I think” McFarlin said. “The kids know what to expect now, what is going to be required of them and they have gotten a chance - especially at some of the bigger meets - to see what it is like and how strong they can actually become in their junior and senior seasons. These kids will be hungry once we get this sport going again next year.”
