Two Kingsville residents were killed in a motorcycle accident Thursday afternoon in Atlanta, Texas.

Gary L. Davis and his wife, Sara Jean Davis, died on the scene after their motorcycle hit an 18-wheeler truck. Gary L.

Davis was driving the motorcycle with his wife seated behind him.

Gary L. Davis, 57, worked at Texas A&M University Kingsville as Associate Director of University Housing and Residence Life.

Sara Jean Davis, also 57, worked as librarian at Kleberg Elementary School.

“According to witnesses, an 18 wheeler was coming up and Mr. Davis was distracted and hit the back of it,” said David Stewart Thursday night.

Stewart, a Department of Public Safety officer, was one of the law enforcement officials who investigated the scene.

Gary L. Davis was driving a Honda Gold Wing Motorcycle, according to DPS officials.

Mike Dupree, Atlanta Police Chief, said Friday both victims were wearing safety helmets.

The couple were pronounced dead at the scene at about 4:45 p.m., according to Stewart.

The driver’s body was transferred to Dallas for an autopsy in compliance with standard state procedures.

Autopsies are usually conducted on drivers of fatal accidents.

Atlanta, Texas, is located in the northeast corner of Texas 20 miles south of Texarkana by U.S Highway 59.

Emilio Castro, Kingsville Independent School District superintendent, was saddened when he heard of their deaths. Sara Jean Davis had been employed with KISD for many years. Castro said he had talked to her a few times since he has been here as superintendent. He described her as an educator who really enjoyed her job and went out of her way to ensure the students reading progress continued.

“The KISD family sends our thoughts and prayers to the Davis family,” Castro said Friday morning.

“This is a tragic loss for KISD, and we are certainly thankful for the time she gave our precious ones in our district. She will not be forgotten.”

Dr. Steven Tallant, TAMUK president, said it was very sad news to learn of the couple’s death.

“It’s hard to imagine our campus without Gary’s ever present smile, sense of humor and helping hand,” Tallant said. “Whatever the project, whatever the need, he was always ready and willing to help in any way.”

“He could always be counted on to tell a joke and share a laugh. Students, faculty and staff were the beneficiaries of his wonderful, happy spirit and wit,” Tallant stated.

“Our campus and the greater Kingsville community will not be able to be the same without Gary and Sara. With their passing, our Javelina family has suffered a devastating loss,” Tallant stated.
