Bishop Badgers varsity baseball went 2-2 last weekend at the Falfurrias baseball tournament, ending the tournament season with a 9-3-1 record.

The Badgers lost to Edcouch Elsa 3-2, beat Laredo LBJ twice 15-0 and 9-4.A

fter pool play was complete, Bishop was involved in a three-way tie for the “wildcard seed” with Odem and Riviera.

Due to the tie, all three teams turned to lady luck in a coin flip to determine seeding.

Odem won the first flip, forcing Bishop and Riviera to flip for a bye on Friday’s “silver cup semi”.

Riviera won that flip, forcing the Badgers to play the semi game, which was the 9-4 victory over the Laredo team.

The win over Laredo brought on another Seahawk-Badger match-up in which Bishop went ahead early 3-0 only to have the Seahawks come back and win 9-4.

Pitcher/designated hitter Carl Huizar earned alltournament honors for his three innings of work, striking out seven Laredo batters while allowing no hits in the opening game of the tournament.

Huizar also went 5 for 11 at the plate in the tournament.

Also receiving alltournament honors was catcher Tommy Cavazos with a 5 for 10 performance at the plate.

“Our hitting has been very streaky, hitting everything in one game and hitting pop-ups the next,” Bishop Badger head coach Nathan Borden said.

Meanwhile, the freshman and junior varsity teams traveled last weekend to Hebbronville to compete in the Hebbronville tournament.

The freshman team placed third with Joseph Rubio and Noel Luna earning alltournament honors.

The JV team placed first with Johnathan Villarreal receiving tournament MVP, while Alan Scott earned offensive MVP.

Esteban Cuevas and Dylan Horner received alltournament honors.

The Badgers opened district play with a game against the Premont Cowboys on Tuesday, Mar. 16 in Bishop, followed by a road trip to face the San Diego Vaqueros on Friday, Mar. 20 in San Diego.
