Police arrest 3 in fake robbery

Three individuals were arrested Wednesday in connection with a reported robbery that occurred at the night deposit drop at Wells Fargo last week.

However, Kingsville police soon discovered the robbery proved to be a case of internal theft.

According to a Kingsville Police Department statement, on Wednesday, March 17, John Anthony Jaimes, 19, an employee of “Check into Cash,” located at 1310 E. General Cavazos Blvd., called 9-1-1 and said that he had just been robbed of the night deposit from the business where he was employed.

Responding police officers found that Jaimes had been sprayed with pepper spray. Jaimes said that he was robbed just after pulling up to the night deposit drop at the bank.

Indeed, surveillance video was viewed, and a male was seen committing what appeared to be the robbery.

After further investigation, police say that the Jaimes fabricated the robbery to cover the losses from the money that he was stealing from his employer.

On Tuesday, additional evidence was obtained that proved the internal theft, according to the Kingsville Police Department.

Jaimes and his girlfriend, Kristin DeLaPaz, 19, of Kingsville, were questioned again, and both confessed to planning a fake robbery to cover up the theft, according to police reports.

Eugene Falcon, 19, also of Kingsville, was questioned and confessed to his role in the scheme (as the robber), police said.

Some of the cash, all of the checks, and some other items were recovered during a search of the apartment of Jaimes and DeLaPaz.

Falcon was charged with engaging in organized criminal activity, a third degree felony.

Both Jaimes and DeLaPaz were charged with engaging in organized criminal activity and theft greater than $1,500, a state jail felony.

In addition, Jaimes may be charged with making a false report to a peace officer, a misdemeanor offense.

All three were placed in the Kleberg County Jail and were released on bond Thursday.
