Bishop boy’s powerlifting team shines at state meet

The Bishop Badgers boys powerlifting team recently competed in the Texas High School Powerlifting Association State Meet on Saturday, March 27 in Abilene.

As a team, the Badgers placed 13th out of 93 schools competing in the state meet.

Earning the Badgers three points was sophomore Travis Charles with a third place finish in the 123 pound weight class.

Charles improved three spots from last year’s sixth place finish at the state meet.

Charles opened the meet with a maximum lift of 395 pounds in the squat, followed by 175 pounds on the bench press.

In the final event for Charles, he went on to lift 380 pounds in the dead lift for a grand total of 950 pounds for the meet.

Charles will continue to work on improving as he will be going to the National Qualifiers Meet on April 10 in Carrizo Springs.

If everything goes well, he will be competing in the Nationals Meet on June 17- 20 in Palm Springs, Calif.

Bishop picked up another two points on junior Bruizer DelBosque’s fourth place finish in the 114 pound weight class.

DelBosque had a maximum 335 pounds in the squat and 175 pounds on the bench press.

In the dead lift event, DelBosque lifted 320 pounds for a total of 830 pounds for the state meet.

DelBosque had a strong state performance, surpassing his regional total by 15 pounds.

The final point for the Badgers came on senior Nocky Garza’s fifth place finish in the 165 pound weight class.

Garza opened the competition with a maximum lift of 520 pounds in the squat event.

Garza followed the squat with a max lift of 270 pounds on the bench press and 470 pounds in the dead lift for a total of 1250 pounds.
