Poetry and short story contest winners posted

The FLAIR Department of the Woman’s Club of Kingsville recently honored the Kleberg County winners of their GFWC Poetry and Short Story Contest at an awards ceremony and reception. All winners, their families, and their school principal and teachers were invited to attend.

The contest is open to all Kleberg County school children, grades 1 through 12. This year seven schools participated in the contest.

Each school selected their own winners and these students received a ribbon. These winning entries then advance to the county level and winners are selected there. Each winner receives a certificate and a rosette for their work.

The Kleberg County winners in the Poetry Contest are:

Category 1, Grades 1-3:

First Place: Daniel Salinas, Epiphany School

Second Place: John David Guerrero, Epiphany School

Third Place: London Lemcke, Epiphany School

Category 2, Grades 4-6:

First Place: Joey Lee, Nanny Elementary

Second Place: Maya Iniguez, Ricardo Elementary

Third Place: Angel Viaz, Nanny Elementary

Category 3, Grades 7-9:

First Place: John Sprandel, DeLaPaz Middle School

Second Place: Jack Burdock, Kaufer High

Third Place: Maddie Yaklin, Ricardo Junior High

Category 4, Grades 10-12:

First Place: Valerie Kinsey, Kaufer High

Second Place: Carson Alsop, Kaufer High

The Kleberg County winners in the Short Story Contest are:

Category 1, Grades 1-3:

First Place: Bryce Griffith, Nanny Elementary

Second Place: Maggie Martin, Nanny Elementary

Third Place: Elly Lopez, Nanny Elementary

Category 2, Grades 4-6:

First Place: Nicolas Muery, DeLaPaz Middle School

Second Place: Kate Remelius, Ricardo Elementary

Third Place: Jake Cochran, Nanny Elementary

Category 3, Grades 7-9:

First Place: Ashley Neely, Kaufer High

Second Place: Gabriel Jimenez, DeLaPaz Middle School

Third Place: Derek Ballard, Ricardo Junior High

Category 4, Grades 10-12:

First Place: Callie Ridley, Kaufer

Second Place: Kaitlyn Polly, Kaufer

Third Place: Alexandria Sholtis, Kaufer

The Kleberg County winners advanced to competition in the South Texas District and the winners there will advance to the TFWC state competition with the results announced at the state convention in Corpus Christi, April 14-16. Texas winners will advance to the national competition and those winners will be announced in June.
