Badger varsity baseball avenge early district loss

The Bishop Badgers varsity baseball team recently avenged their loss to the San Diego Vaqueros with a 15-0 shutout on Friday, April 9 in Bishop.

Bishop needed this win to separate themselves from San Diego who beat them in the first round of district play by a score of 6-4 over spring break.

“We called on senior Carl Huizar to start on the mound and he delivered, striking out nine Vaquero batters in four innings of work while surrendering only one hit,” Bishop Badger Head Baseball Coach Nathan Borden said.

Senior Joey Olvera relieved Huizar in the fifth inning and pitched well, securing the shutout for the Badgers.

“Offensively, we are getting better each week,” Borden said.

The Badgers scored three runs in the second inning, seven in the third inning and five in the fourth inning to obtain a ten-run-rule after four and one half innings.

The victory gives the Badgers, 6-2 in district play, a three game advantage over San Diego.

The remaining games on the schedule for Bishop are Hebbronville, Santa Rosa, Donna IDEA and Riviera.

The Badgers are still in the hunt for a district title but can secure a playoff spot with two wins in the four remaining games.

The Badgers traveled to face the Hebbronville Longhorns on Tuesday, April 13 in Hebbronville.

Game information was not available at press time.

Meanwhile, the Bishop junior varsity squad handed the San Diego J.V. a 14-1 in game one of the doubleheader.

Sophomore Dylan Horner took the mound for the Badgers and held the Vaquero batters to only one run.

“All the way down the lineup our kids hit the ball really well in this game,” Borden said.

The Bishop freshman team took on the Odem junior varsity on Saturday morning, holding on to a 6-5 win.

“This was a tight game all the way through,” Borden said.

Joseph Rubio was the winning pitcher for the Badgers, striking out 19 Owl batters in the complete game.

The big play in this game came in the bottom of the sixth inning with Robert Olivares stealing home plate with two outs.

That turned out to be the decisive run for the Badgers as they held on for a 6-5 victory.

Badgers lasso Cowboys 14-1

The Bishop Badger varsity baseball squad hosted the Premont Cowboys this past Thursday, April 8 in Bishop in a game that was originally scheduled for Tuesday in Premont, but lighting problems at the Premont baseball field delayed the game till Thursday.

Joey Olvera got the nod and threw 22 pitches to six Cowboy batters, not allowing a base runner in his two innings of work.

A.J. Gaona relieved him and went three innings, giving up one run on two hits.

Premont did not have a base runner until the fourth inning.

Offensively, Tommy Cavazos led all Badger batters, going 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Meanwhile, Nick Pacheco went 2 for 2 and Tres Figueroa went 2 for 4 in the contest.

The Badgers scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second, four in the third, two in the four and two in the fifth.
