Riviera-Kaufer High School’s varsity boys and girls golf teams each placed second at the District 32- 2A tournament held at the Tony Butler Golf Course in Harligen on Wednesday, April 7. By doing so, both teams have earned a spot to compete at the Region IV tournament to be held in San Marcos April 19 and 20.

The Lady Seahawks punched their ticket to region by scoring a 510 at district.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Polly won the individual district title with a score of 114. Sophomore Rachel Davis scored a 125 and finished sixth. Junior Shelby McFall scored a 137. Junior Brooke Hickey tallied a 139.

Kaufer’s boys golf team earned their invitation to region by scoring a 395 at district. Individually, Freshman Ryan McKee placed second with a score of 84. Coming in eighth place with a score of 96 was Senior Luc Davis. Sophomore Kyle Weiland scored a 99 and came in ninth place. Senior Brandon Walshak scored a 116 and Sophomore Seth Strubhart tallied a 137.

“Overall, I think we came together well as a team,” Head Coach Jimmy Canchola said. “Some of the kids who needed to step up did.”

The Seahawks improved at just the right time trimming their average season scores at the district meet.

“It was one of those things because the weather was right and it was a tough course, I will say that, for the high school division,” Canchola said. “We had been shooting about the same throughout the year and each player improved a couple of strokes at district so the course toughness was about average for us.”

At region, however, Kaufer will have to deal with opponents of equal talent but who have higher overall numbers.

“We have only four golfers on both the boys and girls teams as where a lot of other schools have two teams of each gender, with up to a total of 10 players, who could advance past region,” Canchola said. “So I expect regionals to be tougher.”

The future, however, looks bright for Kaufer’s young bunch who should contend for the 32-2A mountaintop for years to come.

“We’re very young,” Canchola said. “We return every single girls golfer next year and I’m only losing two golfers on the boys side,” Canchola said. “So as long as they keep getting out there and practicing then we should be okay for next year as well.”
