Bishop High tennis compete in district meet

The Bishop Badger varsity and junior varsity teams recently participated in the district meet held in Hebbronville.

“For three days we traveled to Hebbronville and hoped for a break in the rain so that we could finish our matches,” Bishop tennis coach Claudia Esquivel.

In the varsity division, the Badger boy’s team won the district championship trophy for the fourth year in a row.

Meanwhile, the girl’s were closer to winning the district championship title than ever, but ended up placing second as a team, falling short of first by a mere five points.

The top two players in each division in the district meet advance to regional meet to be held in San Marcos.

Bishop varsity members advancing to the regional meet are Joshua Smith and Caleb Holmes - boy’s doubles district champions, Michael Crisman and Kasey Cavazos - mixed doubles district champions, Leslyn Baker - girl’s singles district champions, Morgan Vassar - second place girl’s singles and Caleb Lee - second place boy’s singles.

Also competing for the varsity Badgers were Grant Michalk, Jennifer Simon, Celina Pecos, Regan Gonzalez, Bianca Reyna, Victoria Ramirez, Ray Garza, Brandon Haddy and Daniel Hinojosa.

In the junior varsity division, the boy’s team earned yet another district championship, while the girl’s team placed third.

Medaling for the JV squad were Ryan Culp and Zachary Lee - boy’s doubles champions, Lauren Morales and Tessa Miller - girl’s doubles champions, Bank Seenuanlae - boy’s singles champion, Zachariah Perez - second place boy’s singles and Ryon Becker and Cole Buckalew - third place boy’s doubles.

Also participating for the JV team were Jayce Cronk, Jonathan Mares, Estrella Chavez, Larissa Guerra, Christina Gonzalez and Dakota Roberts.

Badger boy’s track team competed in district meet

The Bishop Badger boy’s track team recently competed in the district track meet held this past Saturday, April 17 in Santa Rosa.

“The boys competed very hard and we are proud of their effort,” Bishop Badger track coach Chris Knecht said.

Senior Jon Paul Escobar was the district champion in the long jump and will be going to the regional competition.

The 400 meter relay team of Tres Figueroa, Kevin Whitley, Jacob Beltran and Escobar brought home the silver medal, edged out by the Santa Rosa team by a mere tenth of a second.

The team will also advance to the regional meet.

Zack Lowman is the final Bishop boy heading to the regional meet by qualifying on his final throw in the shot put, moving up from sixth to third with a clutch final throw.

Also competing for the Badger boys were Albert Salinas, Alex De La Mora, Garrett Lee, Marc Hinojosa and Jeremiah Keever.

“We had a young team and were able to gain some valuable experience this season,” Knecht said.
