The Brahma varsity and junior varsity tennis teams closed their 2009-2010 season by competing at their respective District 31-4A tournaments held in Tuloso-Midway at the start of this month.
The varsity team, on April 6-7, had three players qualify for the regional tournament which will be held in San Antonio April 20-21. Hope Castaneda and Rachael Rubio finished third in varsity doubles. The duo previously won a meet in San Antonio, took second in Brackenridge and came in third in Falfurrias, Calallen, Weslaco and a T.M. spring tournament.
The Brahma varsity tennis squad had three competitors finish third individually at the District 31-4A meet held in Tuloso-Midway April 6-7. Pictured from left are Hope Castaneda, Aaron Gerragauch and Rachael Rubio. The trio qualified as alternates for the regional tournament to be held this week in San Antonio.
Aaron Gerragauch placed third in singles at the district meet. Gerragauch has an overall season record of 28-12. Prior to district, Gerragauch finished second at a meet in Calallen and came in third in Weslaco, Falfurrias and McAllen.
“The varsity did a pretty good job, I was proud of the way they finished at the district tournament,” Head Coach Ed Gonzales said. “I am a little disappointed we did not qualify for regionals as a team but we are alternates which is the next best thing. I knew we had the talent to make it to regionals but we had too may errors in critical matches but I have to give the varsity players credit for giving one hundred percent.”
H.M. King’s sub varsity tennis teams also had a good showing at their district get-together on April 1.
Sarah Sedory and Matthew Perez finished second in their respective singles brackets. Joseph Galindo and Jiselle Moreno came in second in mixed doubles. Candice Mireles and JoLiza Barrera finished third in their doubles event. J.C. Gonzalez came in fourth in singles. Michael Zamora reached the singles quarterfinals.
“The junior varsity and freshman teams did a great job - both finished third overall - especially when you take into account we did not take a full team of 16,” Gonzales said. “Here we are with only four and five tennis players in each division and many of them reached the finals, so they had a great finish which is good for H.M. King tennis which has a great future ahead.”
Gonzales is expecting the bulk of this year’s players back next season.
“As far as I know right now pretty much the entire team is coming back,” Gonzales said. “I am only losing four seniors, all of whom were great role models for the freshmen and the rest of the underclassmen, and I am definitely going to miss them next year.”
