Brahma track competitors advance to region

The Lady Brahma 400-meter Relay team earned a berth to compete at the Region IV track and field meet while competing at the District 31-4A event held in Calallen last week. King High School had numerous varsity boys and girls track athletes qualify for region while competing in the District 31- 4A meet held in Calallen last Friday. Those qualifiers are scheduled to compete at the Region IV meet to be held at Alamo Stadium in San Antonio on May 3-4.

GIRLS VARSITY

Jasmine Richardson, Hannah Peterson, Madeline Abrigo, Larissa Quintanilla and Celeste Loera (alternate) earned their region berth in the 400-meter Relay. Richardson also qualified for region in the 100-meter Dash and the 200-meter Dash.

“We were performing under the pouring rain at district and I am very proud of the relay team for getting third and moving onto regionals, they have been working hard for this all year long,” Head Coach Ann Callis said. “The girls ran an almost perfect relay at district and they’ve improved every week. We expect, these next two weeks before regionals, to knock some more time off between handoffs and we’re pretty excited about that. Our freshman Jasmine Richardson, who is our anchor on our relay team, also ran the fastest time in our district in the 100-meter Dash so we expect her to make the finals and possibly go to state”

BOYS VARSITY

David Lewis won the District 31-4A championship in the Shot Put event after recording both a personal and school record with a throw of 56’-6.5”. Lewis also placed fifth in the Discus.

Matthew Garza, BJ Ripoyla, Blake Sugarek and Jesse Martinez won their ticket to region in the 1600-meter Relay where they finished second at the district meet with a time of 3:34.07. Martinez also qualified for region in the 800-meter Run where he finished third.

Demetre Richardson, Martinez, Ripoyla and Sugarek qualified as alternates in the 800-meter Relay where they placed fourth with a time of 1:34.91. Garza, Richardson, Ripoyla and Sugarek also came in fifth in the 400-meter Relay with a time of 44.52.

Long distance specialist Andrew Rivas came in fourth in the 3200-meter Run (region alternate) and sixth in the 1600-meter Run. Rivas’ time of 10:33.42 in the 3200-meter Run was a personal record.

H.M. King’s varsity boys finished fifth overall with 51 points.

“The boys did really good as we expected, though we kind of fell short in a couple of relays but we’re much better now from where we were at last year,” Head Coach Eddie Rios Jr. said, “Regionals is going to be tough but David Lewis has a pretty good shot at making it to state; he has one of the best throws in the region thus far this season. Our relay team, if they keep improving, should have a shot at making it into the finals.”

BOYS JUNIOR VARSITY

Xavier Bernal finished third in the Triple Jump. Hermilo Mireles came in sixth in the 100-meter Dash.

Brandon Brice, Lucas Delapaz, Hermilo Mireles and Javi Rojas placed fifth in the 400-meter Relay with a time of 48.89.

Matthew Sanchez, Brice, Delapaz and Rojas finished fifth in the 800-meter Relay with a time of 1:43.82

BOYS FRESHMAN

John Houston won the District 31-4A freshman titles in the Triple Jump (37’-9.5”, PR) and in the 200-meter Dash. Houston also came in fourth in the 100-meter Dash.

Josh Mascorro won the freshman district title in the High Jump. Nick Trevino won the Shot Put competition (35’-5”, PR) and also came in third in the Discus (84’-8”, PR).

Michael Herrera placed second in the 110-meter Hurdles, third in the 300-meter Hurdles (48.49, PR), fourth in the Long Jump (17’5.5”, PR), and fifth in the Triple Jump.

Ruben Herrera was the district’s top freshman in the 300-meter Hurdles (46.68, PR). He also placed fourth in the 110-meter High Hurdles.

Matthew Rivera came in fourth in the 800-meter Run. Sergio Valles finished fifth in both the Discus (66’-9”, PR) and the Shot Put (25’-2”, PR). Genaro Deleon finished sixth in the 100-meter Dash.

Sergio Valles, Nick Trevino, Genaro Deleon and John Houston came in third in both the 400-meter Relays (49.52) and the 800-meter Relays (1:47.62)

Nick Trevino, Ruben Herrera, Michael Herrera and Matthew Rivera placed third in the 1600-meter Relay with a time of 4:12.58.

H.M. King’s freshmen boys team finished second overall with 129 points.
