Bishop juvenile ‘fight-club’ incident under investigation

By Rey Sifuentes Jr.

Bishop High School Principal Ray A. Garza was at his home where a ‘fight-club’ incident took place involving a handful of teenagers last weekend. Garza’s son, a freshman at BHS, had five or six friends over on the night of the incident.

“Mr. Garza and his wife had pizza and soft drinks and water for them,” BCISD Superintendent Christina Gutierrez said. “The kids were there watching movies and playing around, and what I guess happened was when they were in the boy’s bedroom, they may have been doing this boxing and wrestling and the principal didn’t realize that was happening,” she said.

“The kids were coming out and grabbing pizza and sodas and Mr. Garza never had a red flag that any fighting was taking place. Mr. Garza was definitely clueless to what was happening because if he had known, he would never have allowed that type of behavior.”

Garza was not available for comment because he was out on school business and not in his office on Friday.

The incident came to light when a BHS parent saw footage of the fights involving her son on You-Tube. The videos - filmed from a bird’s eye view - show the kids punching, kicking and grappling with each other while others watched. Most of the videos have been removed from You-Tube but a handful supposedly still remain.

Gutierrez, however, said none of the boys involved suffered serious injury.

“That I know of, no, there have not been any injuries,” Gutierrez said. “I know the parents of all the kids who were there and they all have my cell phone number. I can assure you that if any of these kids had been injured, those mommas would have had direct contact with me and would have called me in a heart beat.”

Nueces County District Attorney Anna Jimenez, who called the videos disturbing, said she would be in contact with Child Protective Services and Bishop’s Police Department in regards to their investigations.

“If there is a felony that has been committed then it would be a very serious matter with our office,” Jimenez said, “At this time we don’t know if there is because we don’t know who was in the video, how old they are, if there was any consent by the parents, if this was some type of organized sporting training or any other information other than what is depicted in these videos.”

The who’s and what’s of the fight club footage will determine the severity of the DA’s potential charges.

“Depending on the circumstances, it could be as little as a state jail felony (endangering a child) or a third degree felony (if there were any injuries),” Jimenez said. “There is a number of different ways that something could be charged depending on what the facts reveal.”

Gutierrez, meanwhile, plans on addressing Bishop’s school body as a whole in regards to the incident.

“I barely learned of this on Thursday morning, I had two meetings at that time and then left after lunch to San Antonio because we had our one-act play performing at regionals,” she said. “So I have not had a chance to talk with those students yet. But I do have every intention of addressing the student body in reference to educating them on how serious these types of actions are - even though they see them as innocent and not hurting each other - and what they could possibly escalate to; how the police could end up getting involved.”
