Celebration of Andy Cook’s life is set for May 22

Andrew Morris ‘Andy’ Cook Andrew Morris ‘Andy’ Cook Former long-time Kingsville resident and business and community leader Andrew Morris “Andy” Cook, 79, died Sunday, April 25, 2010 in Richardson.

Cook, born November 15, 1930, was the general manager, part owner and voice of Kingsville’s local radio station KINE, and he was for many years the voice of Javelina football broadcasting.

Cook was involved in every facet of community and business life in Kingsville. He was also a former Kingsville city commissioner and the consummate community leader.

Cook brought national acclaim to KINE in 1967 when the radio station was able to stay on the air and broadcast emergency news during Hurricane Beulah with Cook manning the microphone around the clock.

Even after the radio station was knocked off the air, Cook and his staff continued to operate as a message center for emergency workers and operations at both Celanese and the King Ranch Gas Plant.

In addition to his radio broadcasting career in Kingsville, he spent many years in the radio and TV world, both in front of and behind the microphone and camera, in Austin, Laredo and Corpus Christi.

Family members said Cook’s philosophy was summed up in a verse from the song “My Way” made famous by Frank Sinatra: …“Regrets I’ve had a few… but then again, too few to mention.”

As per Cook’s request, his life will be celebrated May 22 from 2 to 5 p m. at Joe Cotten’s Barbecue in Robstown. Friends are invited to bring their best Andy Cook story.
