Round Two for Lone Star Promotions
Lone Star Promotion’s Jaime Cantu (third from right) is putting together ‘South Texas Young Guns II’ at J.K. Northway on May 15. Pictured above (left to right) at the Junior Olympic Tournament - held at J.K. late last week - are Manuel Sepeda (former IBA world champion), Ann Wolfe (eight time world champion), Jerry Belmontes of Corpus Christi, Jaime, local professional Oscar Gonzalez and 2012 Olympic hopeful Oscar Cantu.
Jaime Cantu is taking another shot as a promoter staging ‘South Texas Young Guns II’ at J.K. Northway Coliseum on May 15. The Twelfth Street Gym owner has plenty of local fighters ready to throw down again after his initial venture in September drew a large crowd.
“Our first show provided plenty of excitement for everyone who attended,” Cantu said. “On the business side, we are going to try to sell more tickets this time to be able to afford to continue bringing these kinds of events to Kingsville. We’re pushing real hard to make this card more successful than the first one and we’d like to see more people in the audience.”
Headlining the venue is Homer Fonseca who won the Texas Heavyweight Title by defeating Austin’s Fred Gatica at the first STYG, and will defend the strap against Chicago fighter Theron Johnson in an eight-round match.
‘El Oso’ is coming off of a questionable loss, after winning the strap, and is now looking to get back on the winning track.
“We were given a chance to fight another up and coming heavyweight, a local boy in Florida who had a record of 14-1 and Homer went out there and lost a disputed majority decision,” Cantu said. “Even the local crowd in Florida thought Homer won.”
Also lacing up the gloves at STYG II is Jon David Charles who puts his unblemished 6-0 record on the line against Edgar Estrada (Reynosa, Mexico) in a six-round light welterweight match.
Oscar Gonzalez will step into the ring against San Antonio boxer Jerrone Lockette in a six-rounder in the welterweight division.
Corpus Christi Fighter Victor Lares will swap punches with Julio Perez (Mission) in a six-round super welterweight fight.
San Diego Fighter Isaac Guzman, unbeaten at 2-0, will face Jeff Beardon of McAllen in a six-round middleweight match.
Ben Bolt’s Solomon Mungia is scheduled to fight Rudy Paz (San Antonio) in a four-rounder in the welterweight division.
Currently seeking opponents are Middleweight Abel Fonseca (Edinburg) and Light Welterweight Raul Tovar (Mission).
