Bishop Pride is at its best for Centennial Celebration

Editor:

On Friday, April 23, volunteers from what we commonly call Celanese, organized by Ed McKinley, Bishop Facility Site Director, provided muscle to the Bishop Pride Committee by ably assisting the City of Bishop Clean-Up Campaign to beautify the city in support of the Bishop Centennial celebration scheduled for May 14-16, 2010.

The volunteers braved heat, humidity, swarms of vicious mosquitoes, various types of thorns and hidden “creatures” as they busily attacked nearly 40 piles of brush throughout the city and transported it to the city collection point from 2-5 p m.

Many residents contributed by taking trash and brush to the collection point, but these special volunteers attacked piles that had festered over time and did it with gusto.

So what did these two teams of trucks, trailers, and peoplepower gain by their labors in the sun?

You had to be there to understand the camaraderie, sense of selfless service and accomplishment as the last trailers of brush were unloaded.

Much cheering took place as the two teams perfected an innovative way of rapidly off loading the brush loaded trailers; teamwork! And, what did the last tired crew do as they started to leave the dumpsite? They stopped to help a man unload a trailer of hard packed brush and leaves; emulating the spirit of the original settlers of Bishop who worked together to build a community from raw land.

So…BIG Bishop THANK YOU for Ed McKinley, Michael Deering, Barry Fuhrken, Joe Diaz, Chris Davis, Jim Zumwalt, Dale Atwell, Jim Price, Don Coats, Adam Remlinger, and Lisa Nunez, who all sweated in the sun along with Cindy Roecker and Rudy Morales who helped organize and were willing, but unable because the date was changed by a week (city wanted to make certain the mosquitoes were really hungry).

On Saturday morning April 24, Lisa Nunez again brought truck and trailer and along with Phil Simon and Jan Senecal loaded up more brush from both the west and east wide of Bishop. In their travels, they stopped to kibitz with the crew lead by Morgan Vassaur that was painting the “Little League” concession stand in the city park.
