An article that appeared on Juan Escobar, “County
judge-elect says leadership key to success” in the
April 28 issue states that he was dishonorably
discharged from the Marines is incorrect. This
was a typographical error. Escobar was honorably
discharged after he completed his tour of duty in
1973. He distinguished himself as a Marine serving
from 1969 until 1973. He was awarded the Purple
Heart Medal for wounds in action in Vietnam and
the Combat Action Ribbon. He was awarded the
Presidential Unit Citation; the Meritorious Unit
Citation; and the Republic of Vietnam Cross of
Gallantry, First Class; Vietnam Service Medal with
3 stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal; Good Conduct
Medal, and the National Defense Medal. He served
with the prestigious U.S. Marine Corps Presidential
Honor Guard in Washington D.C. and served as a
pallbearer for presidents Lyndon B. Johnson, top
photo, and Harry S. Truman. Escobar received the
Vietnam Veterans of America State Legislator of
the Year Award in 2007 at the State Capitol, bottom
