Thanks to an alert family dog, an 86 yearold Bishop woman was saved after falling outside of her home when she was not able to get up.

On Tuesday April 20, Rita V. Guajardo was outside of her home pruning her rose bushes when she suddenly fell down and was unable to get back up.

After trying desperately for about an hour to get the attention of her neighbors by calling and yelling for help, the dog “Chacho”, two-year-old poodle/terrier mix belonging to her niece Yolanda Gonzalez, heard the pleading calls and continuously tried to get his owner’s attention.

Gonzalez was in Bishop with her sister visiting her mother’s house which is next door to Guajardo’s residence.

Gonzalez was already approaching her car to leave and was trying to get Chacho when she noticed his bizarre behavior and decided to check what was wrong.

The dog was acting very strange by barking and running back and forth so Gonzalez followed the dog and was overwhelmed when she found her aunt lying in a puddle of mud and water.

Gonzalez called for help from other family members and neighbors and together they helped pick up Guajardo and got her safely back inside her home.

The Guajardo family is eternally grateful for Chacho and is happy to report that Mrs. Guajardo is doing fine after being a little shaken up.

“If it hadn’t been for Chacho I don’t know how long my mother would have been out there alone,” Nelda Guajardo, Mrs. Guajardo’s daughter said. “We were so blessed.”

As a token of appreciation, the Guajardo family presented Chacho with a medal and certificate of honor for all that he did.
