BADGER HURLER — Bishop’s pitcher Joey Olvera shuts down the Refugio Bobcats in game one of a best of three series with a 2-0 victory on Thursday night. The Bishop Badgers baseball squad took a 1-0 lead in a best of three game series against the Refugio Bobcats with a 2-0 game one victory on Thursday, May 13 at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown.

The Badgers struck early, getting two base hits and one run scored in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead.

Bishop added another run in the top of the third inning, as pinch runner Bruizer Del- Bosque crossed the plate.

The Badgers did just enough to earn the victory, but leaving 10 base runners stranded on base will be a big problem in the playoffs.

Leading the Badgers offensively were catcher Tommy Cavazos and first baseman A.J. Gaona with each collecting two hits on the night.

Defensively, Bishop called on pitcher Joey Olvera to take the mound and subdue the Bobcat offense.

“Joey has been consistently throwing strikes for us down the stretch,” Bishop Badger Baseball Head Coach Nathan Borden said.

Olvera had seven strikeouts, allowed three hits, and walked one in a complete game to pick up the win.

Refugio struggled against the stingy Badger defense, reaching second base only twice in seven innings.

The Badgers faced the Bobcats for game two at 8 p.m., Friday, May 14 at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown, game information not available at press time.
