Too many errors committed in different innings resulted in Riviera-Kaufer’s varsity baseball team losing Game One of their area match against Taft 2-1 at the Richard Borchard Fairgrounds in Robstown this past Thursday. Game Two was to be played on Friday and Game Three – if needed – was scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 15.

Pitcher J.D. Moya was in a real pitcher’s duel with his Taft counterpart as both teams only garnered a single hit headed into the sixth inning. Catcher Steven Salinas gunned down a Taft runner trying to steal second in the fourth inning hooking up with Infielder Jacob Salinas for the pickoff.

Moya struck out four batters while the Seahawks also struggled to connect with the ball at the plate.

The Seahawks, however, committed three errors in consecutive plays in the bottom of the sixth inning allowing a Taft runner to eventually circle the bases and come home and the Greyhounds took a 1-0 lead.

Wade Moore was standing on first base, after being walked, when Brett Quackenbush (who was facing a 2-2 count) popped a single which brought Moore in for the tying score with two outs against Kaufer in the bottom of the seventh inning; reviving the collective spirits of both the Kaufer dugout and their fans.

Taft, however, loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and a mishandled pitch by Kaufer allowed Taft to score the go-ahead run giving the Greyhounds the narrow win.
