The Bishop Badgers baseball team(21-8-1) swept the District 30-AA Champion Refugio Bobcats in the best of three game series this past weekend with a 4-0 game two victory on Friday, May 14 at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown.

The Badger defense continued to dominate, holding the Bobcats scoreless for a second straight game.

“Stepping up for us defensively were outfielder Bruizer Del Bosque and third baseman Dylan Horner,” Bishop Badger Head Coach Nathan Borden said.

The tone for game two was set by Bishop pitcher Carl Huizar, who struck out 13 while allowing only two hits in the complete game.

Offensively, Bishop was led by the Gaona cousins, A.J. and Robert, who also made big contributions at the plate in game one.

“I will have to play with the batting lineup, we are leaving too many stranded on the bases,” Borden said.

The Badgers will advance to the regional quarterfinals for the second straight year, facing a familiar foe in the 32-AA District Champion Riviera-Kaufer Seahawks for the fifth time this year.

The Seahawks have won three of the four previous match-ups with scores of 9-4, 6-5, 3-2 and the lone loss coming on a 5-6 score.

The Badgers see the playoffs as a whole new season, looking forward to turn things around in an expected hard fought series.

The Seahawks won their three game series with the Taft Greyhounds, 1-2, 2-1 and 8-1 this past weekend.

“This is also the third time in four years that 32-AA teams have met in this round of the playoffs which speaks volumes for our baseball district,” Borden said.

“Over the last three years, six of our nine ball games with these guys (Seahawks) have been decided by one run. It should be a very exciting series.”

Game one, in the highly anticipated contest, is set for 7 p.m., Thursday, May 20 while game two is set for 5 p.m., Friday, May 21.

Game three, if needed, is scheduled for 2 p.m., Saturday, May 22.

All games will take place at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown.

Ticket prices for all games will be $5 for adults and $3 for students.

District passes and Gold cards will be accepted at the gate.
