Bishop celebrates 100th birthday with a bang!
Children’s acitivities at the festival included slides, rides, and games for all ages. Bishop residents woke up to some dark clouds, thunder, lightning and heavy rain early Saturday morning.
The first thought on everyone’s mind... this is not going to be good for Bishop’s 100th Birthday celebration.
But big hearts and minds overpowered the storm in Bishop.
Bishop’s Centennial Celebration festivities continued through the storm Saturday morning. There were about 60 participants in the 5K Run/Walk event.
According to Race Director Tom Wolter, all the time cards and age bracket boards were blown down and soaked by the storm.
“I want to thank all the brave people that lined up and ran/walked through sideways rain and hammering thunder. I saw several smiles and heard good natured comments as runners sloshed towards the finish (line),” Wolter said.
Bishop High School Band marches in the Bishop Centennial Parade Some attended the centennial breakfast as well. While barbecue cook-off competitors began cooking up some brisket, ribs, and chicken.
There were 34 teams that competed in the barbecue cook-off.
Judges chose the best tasting brisket, ribs, chicken, and chef’s choice.
Shortly before the parade began, Mother Nature stopped the rains and the parade went on as scheduled.
Several local businesses, pioneer families, motorists and the BHS band participated in the parade.
The skies were clear and the festivities continued for the rest of the day.
Festival activities included children’s rides to giant slides, a rock wall, food, games, vendors, farm equipment display, a hospitality center which included the display of the 1960 time capsule contents, (pictures, letters, and other items) a Centennial museum featured a general store, novelties and memorabilia.

A fireworks display that was put on across Lake LaCour for all to see wowed the crowd.
The events held on Friday, May 14 were a huge success as well. Residents participated in an old-fashioned tea and style show, domino tournament, Pioneer Family Recognition (Pioneer family photos will be published in an upcoming issue of the Kingsville Record and Bishop News), street dance, and booths and vendors.
As far as from an onlooker’s perspective, everything seemed to go smoothly throughout the celebration.
Berkman’s Service Station was one of many businesses in Bishop back in the day The few committee members that took on this great task of organizing this event did an outstanding job.
