Lady Brahma all-district selections announced
The 2010 All-District 31- 4A team is once again full of Lady Brahmas.
Picked for the first alldistrict team were Catcher Desiree Ayarzagoitia, Short Stop Julia Sanford and Outfielder Stephanie Lozano.
Named to the second all-district team were Pitcher Emily Ochoa and First Baseman Angie Arredondo. Receiving Honorable Mention were Constance Brandenburg and Diana Castillo. Brittany Arredondo and Ayarzagoitia were selected for the All- Academic team.
Marivel Mireles was named as the district’s Newcomer of the Year.
Head Coach Nilda Garcia is already lamenting the departure of her five seniors; Brandenburg, Lozano, Ayarzagoitia and both Arredondos.
“I’m going to miss these five girls quite a bit,” Garcia said. “I have been working with them for the past four years and when you have spent so much time with a group like this you are definitely going to miss them.”
One of the most deserved all-district accolades went to Ochoa who came in for Brandenburg who was enduring a hip injury this season. Ochoa helped steer H.M. King’s ship through the majority of the district campaign and into the postseason.
“I think she did a great job,” Garcia said. “She picked up the slack when we needed her to with no complaints. That says a lot for Emily who came through for us and helped get us to where we were at; she just did a wonderful job.”
Garcia is proud of the way her team battled through 2010.
“This season was maybe different but we still worked hard and I think the young ladies on this year’s team stepped it up a notch,” Garcia said. “They were determined to make it to the playoffs and had their hearts totally into this season.”
The Lady Brahmas finished in second place in District 31-4A with a 12-2 record and reached the area round of the playoffs.
Now Garcia hopes to find new girls ready to carry the Lady Brahma softball banner.
“It is a challenge replacing girls every year but we find a way to do so,” Garcia said. “The tradition that we have is something the girls on this team consistently want to continue.”
