Badgers eliminated in regional semifinal round
The Bishop Badger baseball season ended after losing 12-7 in game two to the Weimar Wildcats on Saturday, May 29 at the San Antonio ISD Sports Complex in San Antonio.
The Badgers had lost game one by the score of 5-2 on Thursday, May 27 in Cibolo.
Bishop was facing a must win situation and demonstrated tremendous tenacity and grit, taking the Wildcats into extra innings before getting eliminated from the playoffs.
The Badgers started on a furious pace, scoring three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning.
Dylan Horner picked up two RBI’s in the inning on a shot to left field.
In the top of the third, the Wildcats loaded the bases with two outs and were looking to strike, but a quick throw from pitcher Carl Huizar to first baseman A.J. Gaona picked off the runner at first to end the threat.
In the top of the fourth, Weimar once again loaded the bases with no outs, but would only pick up one run on a Wildcat batter hit by pitch.
At the end of four, the Badgers led 4-1 after Robert Gaona crossed the plate on a passed ball on the catcher during that inning.
In the fifth inning, the Wildcats exploded with six runs, with the highlight of the inning being a leadoff homerun to start the Weimar rally.
Huizar seemed to struggle with his control, hitting four and walking four Weimar batters in four innings of work before getting relieved by A.J. Gaona in the fifth with no outs.
At the end of five innings, the Wildcats were holding a 4-7 advantage over the Badgers.
Both teams were unable to get any runs, until Bishop proved that Badger pride never dies by rallying on their last at bat in regulation to knot the game at 7-7 with back to back triples by Huizar and catcher Tommy Cavazos highlighting the inning.
Unfortunately for Bishop, the Wildcats broke out for five runs in the top of the eighth inning and held the Badgers hitless to earn the victory and advance to face Rogers in the regional finals.
Leading the Badgers offensively in the loss were second baseman Dave Gonzalez, getting on base four times on three hits and a walk and Huizar with two singles, a triple and an RBI on the night.
Also contributing to the Bishop effort were Horner with one single, a double and two RBI’s and Cavazos with one single, a triple and one RBI in the game.
The Badgers 2010 season record ended at 23-11-1.
