Santa Gertrudis Breed Comes Home


SANTA GERTRUDIS BREED COMES HOME — The 2010 National Santa Gertrudis Junior Heifer Show is underway at the J.K. Northway Exposition Center. This is the 32nd annual show, and events include a queen’s contest, public speaking contest, herdsman contest and showmanship competition. The show began Monday and will continue through Saturday. The last time the show was in Kingsville was 1986. About 200 4-H and FFA students from around the United States are participating and showing around 400 head of Santa Gertrudis cattle, all hoping to win the national title as well as over $36,000 worth of scholarships. Members of the Premier Junior Association pose in front of their stall display at the Junior Heifer Show. The group consists of 32 youngsters and 82 heifers and the theme of their display is “Where Our Roots Run Deep,” showing the King Ranch brand as the root of their group, which has branched out to include other affiliates over the years.
