Seahawks make all-district baseball team
It’s a different summer but with the same result as Riviera-Kaufer High School’s varsity baseball team recently had numerous players named to the All- District 32-2A team.
J.D. Moya (shortstop and pitcher) was honored as the district’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Ricky Falcon (centerfielder) was a unanimous selection for the first alldistrict team. Wade Moore (pitcher) was named to the second all-conference squad.
“As far as the seniors go, Falcon and Moore were our big leaders and all of these guys did a great job for us this season,” Head Coach Joseph R. Pickens said.
“Moya I had hoped would be picked as the district’s Most Valuable Player after the last three starts he had against the big three dogs; Bishop, Hebbronville and San Diego.”
Heston Van Fleet (a first all-district selection as a pitcher) was another big contributor this season.
“Van Fleet really did his job all the way throughout the course of the year,” Pickens said. “He was a very big utility guy playing third base, shortstop and pitcher for us and is just a great athlete.”
Jacob Salinas (first team pick at second base) was another key figure for the 2010 Seahawks.
“Jacob also provided the team with some senior leadership and always expected to do well so he really came through for us this year,” Pickens said.
Named to the second alldistrict roster were Steven Salinas (catcher), Brett Quackenbush (right field) and Britt Reynolds (first base).
Pickens – honored as 32- 2A’s Coach of the Year – explained the worth of utility players.
“They are huge, every one of our pitchers played another primary position for us – wherever we needed them to – and that plays a big part,” Pickens said.
“As a coach you have to know when to put those guys where, mixing and matching, and I was lucky enough to have so many utility guys such as Moya, Falcon and Van Fleet and that just shows you the overall athleticism of these guys.”
Though not coming back next year, Pickens expressed his appreciation for his team’s roll-up-your-sleeves approach to the game.
“The kids made it all the while for me and I could not ask for a better group,” Pickens said.
“The seniors and underclassmen always practiced hard and none of them ever complained about anything that you sometimes get from the younger kids. They just came ready to play, enjoyed playing baseball and also how I went about coaching them.”
The Seahawks won the District 32-2A title with an 11-1 record this season. Kaufer eliminated Taft in the area round of the playoffs and reached the Region IV quarterfinals.
