Bishop student to conduct national anthem at KSO 4th of July concert

Nicholas Brown Nicholas Brown A Bishop High School senior will conduct “The Star Spangled Banner” at the annual Kingsville Symphony Orchestra patriotic concert on July 4.

Nicholas Brown is the son of Robbie and Katie Brown of Kingsville and the grandson of Gail and Mary Ann Oldham of Kingsville and Walter “Pot” and Betty Brown of Riviera.

Mary Ann Oldham won the Kingsville Symphony Orchestra silent auction last fall in the bid to lead the national anthem and gave the honor to her talented grandson.

The concert will be in Jones Auditorium, 855 N. Armstrong, on Sunday, July 4, at 3 p.m.

A multi-talented musician, Nicholas has served for two yeas as Drum Major with the Bishop High School Band.

He recently received a “1” for his trumpet solo at the UIL Solo Contest.

He was a member of the UIL Region band concert. He began playing the piano at age four and today still continues with lessons.

Nicholas surprised his parents and grandparents by composing a piano piece and performing it at the Bishop Christmas concert.

A member of the National Honor Society, the teenager is also active in the school theater arts program and public speaking and debate.

He placed first at the State UIL meet in Informative Speaking.

He recently returned from Kansas City, where he competed in Lincoln- Douglas Debate and Impromptu Speaking at the National Forensic League National Tournament.

This past spring he was selected by the Bishop chapter of the American Legion to attend Texas Boys State where he served as a state delegate as well as participated in the band.

Nicholas will also attend Texas A&M Kingsville’s Young Engineers of South Texas Summer Camp.

As a member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church, Nicholas serves as altar server, lector, and Eucharistic minister.

Tickets for the concert are available at the Kingsville Visitors Center, the Kingsville Chamber of Commerce, the Music Department at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, and all Kleberg Bank locations.

Prices are $30, $20, and $10.
