TAMUK preparing for Alex
Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s Emergency Management Team met this morning to review forecasts for Tropical Storm Alex.
According to the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Alex is expected to become a Category 1 Hurricane later Tuesday and to make landfall late on Wednesday evening affecting northeastern Mexico and southern Texas.
Due to the fact that the storm is quite a distance from the campus, Texas A&M University-Kingsville’s main campus will continue to operate normally with all employees reporting to work and classes being held on Wednesday, June 30.
At this time, A&M-Kingsville’s only closure is for the Citrus Center in Weslaco, which closed Tuesday afternoon due to strong rains and potential building damage.
The Citrus Center will remain closed on Wednesday and Thursday.
The university’s Emergency Management Team will continue to track the storm closely and communicate with the community no later than noon on Wednesday regarding operations on Thursday as directed by President Steven Tallant.
If the campus is forced to close on Thursday, July 1, due to the hurricane activity (tornadoes, flash floods, etc.) final exams will be rescheduled for Friday, July 2, 2010.
The storm is approximately 36 hours away from making landfall, and at this point the Emergency Management Team has completed all tasks necessary to be prepared for a Category 1 or 2 Hurricane.
In the event of a campus closure, notification will be sent through campus email as well as through cell phones/text messages if the individual has provided their cell phone information to the university. Any closures will also be advertised on the university website.
