Benefit concert set Saturday for leukemia victim

Gabriel J. Mata Gabriel J. Mata A benefit concert for leukemia patient Gabriel J. Mata, 36, of Kingsville will be held Friday, July 30 from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Texas Ranch Club, located at 406 N. Sixth St.

Alex J. Mata, 36, Gabriel’s twin brother and president of the Wrangler Crew, and Leo Saenz, owner of the Texas Ranch, have joined forces to raise money for Mata’s hospital expenses.

The concert, with a $10 donation per person, will feature Kingsville’s own Groupo Vidal with special guest performances by

Will Rise, Groupo Vizzion, Tony “El Tigre” Saenz, and Bad Boyz del Valle.

A carne guisada plate fundraiser benefiting Mata will also take place Sunday, Aug. 1, from noon to 3 p.m. at the South Texas Adult Day Care Center, located 1420 N. 17th St.

Organizers are asking for a $6 donation and beverages will also be available for an additional charge.

Gabriel and Alex Mata Gabriel and Alex Mata Mata was diagnosed with leukemia on June 6.

He has dedicated his life to serving the Kingsville community as an employee of Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg for 13 years, Amedisys Home Health Services, and has also worked private duty patient care.

He is an active member of the Fraternity of Men of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Kingsville.

As the vice president of the Wrangler Crew, he has helped sponsor several organizations within the community.

Friends of Mata describe him as a person who has always taken care of others in their time of need and he is known for his passion, love of dancing, generosity, and wisdom.

Gabriel is currently in Houston at M.D. Anderson Hospital, and his brother Alex found out Monday that he is a match to donate bone marrow and will do so as soon as everything is cleared.

“Being a twin, the chances for me to be a match were not that high,” he said. “I’m amazed that I am.”
