Christus Spohn Hospital System announces mobile clinic services

By Erika Hernandez

The City of Bishop has begun receiving free mobile clinic services from the Christus Spohn Hospital System assisting with women’s obstetrics and gynecological services, prenatal care, and health screenings and education for the uninsured.

Michelle Mora-Trevino, Christus Spohn Health System Marketing Director, first brought up the idea to the Bishop City Council in December.

Trevino asked permission for the mobile clinic to be setup at the city park area and its for the use of the utilities and was unanimously approved by council members.

The service is offered once a week, Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p m. at the Bishop City Park, located at 104 West Joyce Street.

“We were trying to find a central location in the community that could be accessible to the citizens of the area,” Trevino said. “We found that the city park would be a perfect place for us to set up. ” Anyone in the surrounding area, not just citizens from Nueces County, qualifies for the services and appointments must be made by the patient beforehand in order to be seen.

All services are free of charge for qualified patients.

The mobile clinic, which is based at Christus Spohn Hospital South, offers gynecology services to women of all ages such as prenatal care and mammograms.

“We are able to help pregnant women up until they are around seven months pregnant and at that time we will be able to connect them to outside services where they will be able to see a physicians assistant at an area hospital,” Trevino said.

The staff also assists patients in applying for WIC (Women, Infants and Children) and Medicaid program benefits so that patients can easily access care by a physician when needed. The mobile clinic is available for lab work although services such as X-Rays would have to be done in the hospital and are still offered free of charge to qualified patients.

The Christus Spohn Mobile Clinic began in 1993 to deliver prenatal health care and education to pregnant teens that didn’t have access to transportation or couldn’t afford medical care.

Over the years, the “medical office on wheels” has become a highly successful outreach program, embraced by the women in the rural communities it serves.

Currently the mobile clinic is set up in Mathis, Taft, Robstown, and Aransas Pass on different days of the week.
